Have a 1994 Cobra SX that I am trying to remove the gimbal ring on. Have the factory manual and the 984146 OMC Steering Arm Puller. Ran into a couple problems. The dowels on the Puller are equal length, but when put into place, the puller sits crooked, like the dowels need to be different lengths and the tool sits so high I cannot use the factory bolt. I tried a longer bolt and then tightening it but nothing budges.
Am assuming the interference fit is between the Steering Arm and the 4 studs on the Gimbal Ring. Tried penetrating oil with no luck. Think I need to try some heat on the studs at the top of the Steering Arm? Also, any idea why the dowels don't make the tool sit even when in place? Perhaps the correct puller is actually a Volvo tool instead, that would have unequal length dowels?
