I have a OMC 3.0L with cobra outdrive 1988. the trim does not make a sound when I use the controls on the throttle, not even a sound.

So I jumped the solinod and nothing happened. I disconnected the wireing harness from the trim unit and ran it straight to the battery. Nothing happened, so I tappd the motor with a hammer and now it goes up and down when I wire it straight to the battery. It still does nothing when I plug the harness back up and try to use the controls. My question is this. There is a 50 amp fuse and 2 solinods is this all there is to check or is there a relay or two?

The solenoids ARE relays.

They are actuated by the cockpit/throttle switches.

Trim systems are also frequently wired "hot" so you can operate it with the "key" off.

It uses solenoids because the control switches would fail quickly trying to switch the high current the motor draws.

You probably have a broken wire in the power supply line or a bad (corroded) switch(s) in the throttle control.

It's just a simple DC motor that is controlled with high current relays (solenoids)

Normal electrical troubleshooting rules apply...

At least you found the fuse... That fuse made me nutty one time.. Mine has a solenoid, fuse, relay for up, and a relay for down..
If ya end up needing to get some relays, buy a extra to carry.. Just a little advice

Udated. Went to boat today and this is what I did and found. need it translated.

put new 50 Amp fuse in and it didn't help.

Jumped solenoid nothing happened no click nothing.

Ran hot wire from battery to green wire on solenoid and nothing happened.

Ran hot wire from battery to the side of solenoid opposite of the jumper from solenoid to solenoid and finally it drive went down.

I did the same to both soleoids and had same results.

With all that said is it th switch or are both solenoids bad?

You need to get a meter or test light and actually see where the power stops. Jumping terminals only bypasses them, it doesn't actually troubleshoot the problem. For example, if you don't have power to the trim/tilt button, nothing downstream will work. Do you have a wiring diagram?
