I have had some overfuel problems and replaced ect sensor and seemed to resolve problem, however I recently got the diagnostic tool from e-bay and flash code is 33, I replaced map sensor and cleared according to instructions and still have code 33. Also when I install this tool my IAC valve rattles (for lack of better discription) seems odd to me.The motor runs ok, though starts require I advance throttle a little, here is what I have done so far, cleaned vapor tank (clean when opened- amazingly) new fuel filter ,new set injectors, new fuel pumps, have 28lbs. press. Cleaned IAC, New ECT sensor, new MAP sensor, Cleaned dist cap and rotor, spk plugs, coil cleaned and checked, removed and cleaned ground wires, new gaskets for elbows, checked imp in water pump and thermostat (runs about 155 to 160f) I checked for air leaks at manifold connections fnd none. So I guess my question is what else should I do for the code 33 and why is IAC making noise when diagn. tool is inserted in test port?

It is normal to hear some IAC activity when placing an engine in Service Mode.

You mentioned that you cleaned the cap, rotor and plugs. I would highly recommend replacing them and the plug wires. Then retest and attempt to clear the Code 33. Make sure that you perform the code clearing procedure and turn the key off for ten seconds before turning the key back on and rechecking to see if the code cleared.

On Merc (MEFI 1-3), I believe FC 33 deal with the MAP sensor. Does it mean the same thing on a Volvo?

Before this goes to far, what is the full Model number of your engine. While you may have a 97 boat, the engine could very easily be a 96 modle and some of the test procedures could change. Year might work on some things, but not EFI.

Hi, thanks for the response, my boat is 1988, the engine was bought in 1998, the model # on the ECM is 57TBI/97USO1 The original eng data plate is nowhere to be found. I am pretty sure about the year. The cap rotor and wires don't have 30 hours on them.I checked manifold vac. it was 14 (right what it should be). I followed procedure for code clearing ie; insert tool,turn ignition on, slowly advance throttle to full and return slowly to idle position, remove tool, turn off ign. wait 20 seconds etc. The seloc manual I have says 1994-98 code 33 diagnostic procedures. I also have a Volvo TBI diagnostic manual for NC models,I don't know what an NC model is but it seems to coincide with the Seloc 1992-03 manual as far as the map sensor info.Thanks again for helping.

The NC uses differnt ECM than a BY model.
You still haven't given a SN or full model number of the engine. I use OEM manuals, not Seloc they are too general and often wrong. Here's a link to the service bulletin on how to ID your engine EXACTLY.

OK. a fun trip through ancient files (thanks to my wife) yielded a letter I wrote to Volvo asking for ID info and here we have it Serial # 4110143930 Model # 5.7 GSI PLKD - manu. 4/97.

Download the above manual, then go to section 6, page 40 to troubleshoot the code 33.

Thanks, big help for sure! Have some reading to do... I noticed several discrepencies in this Seloc manual and have had it only a few days... get whacha pay for...Stand by.

Doesn't surprise me one bit, You might want to consider getting the set of OEM service manuals for your engine and drive. iboats does carry them.
