I dont know what could be cousing this. I have a 350 gm motor, The coil seemed to have what looks like clean oil were the plug goes in. I cleaned most of it out and took the boat out, at the end of the day the coil and under it is coated in what seems to be oil. I have no idea what would couse this. the coil sits on a bracket what could this be. It has done this both times out. no problems with it but would like to know why it keeps "making oil"

Probably coming out of the coil. Take it off and lay it on the bench overnight and see if it's sitting in a puddle in the AM.

Yes coils are oil filled and if the oil leaks out the coil is junk.

I am not an expert but this site has mentioned that marine coils are gel filled and regular automotive coils are oil filled. Possible that you might need the marine coil anyway. Probably:) worth the upgrade.

Best way to clean up that mess is to throw aweay the coil and get a proper marine coil. Then consider yourself lucky for not starting a fire and being added to the Darwin list!

If it's not coming out of the coil, you could check your oil pressure switch and see if it is leaking. It's over there by the coil..

Let us know what you find out..

Not true. Marine coils can also be oil filled.

I have heard repeatedly, on this forum, that marine coils are epoxy filled, or at least, don't contain oil, and for the very reason as the topic of this thread. If that's not the case, please accept my apolagy for sounding like a "know it all".

Covered in oil is not good. Either the coil sprung a leak or the engine is spewing it. I choose the latter. Check your PCV system and or blow by.

Re: Coil covered in oil???

Thankyou all for the fast replies. The boat is up at the lake so the next time i get up there i will change the coil. I know for a fact that it is not coming from the engin. i didnt know that coils had oil in them at all. Lean something new every day. Thankyou again and happy boating.
