Coil gets very hot

I have a Pertronix II igniter with a Flame Thrower II coil that got very hot to the touch. It bothered me so I put my old coil with a resistor back in which did not get as hot. Now ( 40 or 50 hrs later) I've got an issue with the motor running for a while and cutting off and not cranking until it cools off. I thought it was fuel issue but I'm now wandering about this coil heating issue. I swapped back to the Igniter II and boat fires up and I let it run about 45 minutes in my yard with no problem. The Igniter II was hot as heck but it ran nicely (no load) but I don't know what's normal. Is it normal for the coils to get so hot with after a change from points to electronic ignition ? Is it ok for the Flame Thrower to get hotter than other coils ?

Re: Coil gets very hot

I put an ignitor on with a flame thrower coil and after a few times around the lake it would die until it cooled off. Last week end it would not restart at all with the points or ignitor. I checked the voltage of the ignition wire and was good with 12 1/2 volts.

I then checked the flame thrower coil and it showed no resistance and it should have shown 3 ohms as it was the 3 ohm version. I went home and got the stock coil then went back to the lake and put it on. The engine started right up and ran fine until i spun the engine out put splines in the rubber.

I am hoping the flamethrower coil was the problem as all my wires were hooked correctly.

Re: Coil gets very hot

By the way, mine ran fine for long periods in the driveway with the flame thrower coil on also. 4 different days at the lake i had trouble with the engine shutting off after a few pass's around the lake.

It will be a while now before i can sort things out as i'm rebuilding the transom. This was the 4th ignitor and flame thrower i have installed on different engines and the only one i have had problems with.

Like i said, i know my wires were hooked correctly but now i have a dead flame thrower coil with less than 15 hours on it.
