So I am having an electrical issue and picked up a coil for my merc 3.0 (1998). I got the coil and the 2 connectors which go together when you put them on don’t fit by the metal bracket? Anyone run into this? Ideas? Do I need to somehow shave the metal bracket?

I gave them the model number off the engine and brought the old one with me. They looked the same but the bracket is different. Funny you say that I showed my auto mechanic yesterday and he pulled out a GM one to compare and they are the same but this one has sealing on it. Part is in the pic below

Didn't happen to get it from ebay or amazon?
Asking because date is 2006, so was it an old box and guy went to auto store and sold as marine. The Merc ones are always painted and usually sealed

Interesting when I look up my engine serial number it gives me a different part number. It gives me 817378T which doesn’t match the 898253T27. My engine serial number is. 0L057558 I Know it probably isn’t it, I was stranded on the lake with some family up and didn’t have spark so took a shot in the dark. Of course they are non returnable so I mine as well put it in. I put the issue under the motor section and someone (maybe you all dodge) gave me stuff to try I just have to get some time away from work to get to it. Hopefully tm.

only about 3 out of a million coils that are changed are actually bad. so AD is right, its almost never the coil.

did you go thru the troubleshooting tree in the manual?

The coil part number was superseded by the other number. See item 17, shows old and new

So the question is why are the brackets surrounding it different? The original bracket is lower than the new one.
The original problem that started this.

boat ran fine then one day I go out and start it, let it idle for a few while I waited for some family to show up. When they did I go to start it and it would crank but not fire. My buddy checked for spark and said there wasn’t any. Now I had family up, very few tools and no meter. So I got a coil figuring it was a long shot. Get the new coil and see the connectors don’t work. Put the old one back in and give it another turn of the key And now it wasn’t cranking. I checked the trim and that still worked, checked the fuses and didn’t see any obv. Got it home and and found the 55 amp fuse on the starter lug was blown. Replaced that and it fired right up. Took it back out a hand full of times and assumed it was something with that fuse. Was out all day sat and it was great. Sun I go get it, it would crank but not fire, I kept opening the throttle wide open and it finally started but then cut out instantly, not like a starving for fuel shut off but an instant stop. I got it going again and the whole back of the boat was shaking at first and it blew out some dark smoke probably from flooding. Heading to the dock at low speed it was stuttering and a few times felt like it was going to cut out completely.

Ad is told me to check the voltage on before, on and after startup.

I have the documentation from Regal, I called them but it’s basically a wiring diagram.

The fuse is a 90 amp and is there to protect the alternator. With it being blown my first guess is your ALT is shorting out, voltage is low. With voltage being low next to nothing is working

With low voltage there would be weak spark, unbruned gas so would act like flooding

So maybe I didn’t hear the guy when he gave me the new one but he said “oh black one that’s 55amp”. Should it be a 90? It looks like the 90s are white?

Your correct, used your SN and does list 55 amp
Original ALT was lower amperage

Same comment if the ALT has an issue

So I went out and started it. Battery at 12 PRR starting and around 14 while idling. This was out of water hooked up to the hose. It fired right up and again the engine was shaking like crazy. Ran for 30 seconds and dropped out, gave 1 sputter before it quit. Fired back up again motor was shaking pretty’s bad, had a little dark smoke. About 30 seconds after that it started idling smooth. A few times it felt like it was going to die but it just hesitated and got back to idle. After that it ran fine for another min or 2 before I shut it off. Unfortunately I couldn’t see the meter when those few dips happened.
