I have a 140hp Johnson...1978 model...I get my manual tommorrow and tools this weekend...I have a question about coils..i've seen alot of motors...v-4's in particular that have newer older style coils on them...I would like to up grade to the type of coil that has the removable plug wire...mine are orginal I believe as the plug wire is molded into the coil....is this a common practice....are resistances/ voltages (input, output) different on these...will they work with my powerpacks?? I'm just wondering for future reference as I figure I'll be replacing them or some at some point. I really do not like the way it looks with mismatched coils but if it is better to go newer I will and slowly change them all over as they die...if not I'll stick with the orginal style. Thanks!

Re: coil question...

Your plug wires are replaceable. Just yank 'em out of the sockets in the coil. You'll need a little lube on the new ones to seat them properly. Soapy water works fine.

Re: coil question...

really?? didn't realize that..they really looked epoxied in. what about the newer coils?? is this a common practice or just what alot of mechs do?? do you gain anything by going with the newer coil?? to me the older ones without the black molded cover would be better because they could get rid of heat better...although moisture would more readily get to them...so just pull them right out?? is there a pin or something in the coil to go up into the wire?? or do you need to strip it?? sorry for all the questions...I see your on and i've enjoyed reading your posts and you seem very knowledgable on the electronics of this engine. Thanks!

Re: coil question...

No pins, no fuss, no muss.

Just yank. They've probably baked in a bit from all the heat over the years. Did the same thing on my '77 coils a few months ago.

You probably want to pay attention to the thread right next door "Coil Opinion". I'm contemplating replacing my original green coils as part of a powerhead swap. The new replacements are the same thing, just with the black bakeolite coating.

yeah I saw your thread about that and was reading it but didn't want to jump into the middle of it...I also have the green ones and was wondering about going to the blacks...seems like it would be a smart thing...were there any changes in coil design through the years from the green to black?? besides the baked on coating?? they had coils like that up into the 80's didnt' they??

Re: coil question...

The black coated coils came in either in the late 70's or early 80's. I've never had one right at the switch, so I'm unsure exactly when it was.

Re: coil question...

Ranger if your coils are functioning properly, but the wires are rotting, there is usually enough of the wire left to cut it back a bit. You will need to buy a plug "boot kit". Just remove the old boot, cut back the wire, getting rid of the rot , yet leaving enought to reach the plug, clean about 1/8 of an inch of insulation off, fold it over, insert the new plug coil, lube it up to ease in the insertion of the new boot, it is a tight fit. And dont use wd 40 as iWombat has taught me.

Re: coil question...

To answer your original question, yes the later style coils with the booted plug wire connection are a direct replacement...
