I bought two new coils with part number 0584477 on the box. I installed the coils and my fly wheel does not turn very well. i get about 1/4 turn and thats it.

The numbers on the new coils are 583249 and 21AJ-DG. I suspect I got the wrong coils.

The motor is a 5.5hp 1960 Model 5520. Before I return them can someone verify if this is an acceptable substitute and it is my error?

Re: Coil replacement

The original part number was 580118, this was replaced by 582995 and this in turn by 584477.

I have not identified 583249

Re: Coil replacement

Thks for the assistance, does the number on the new coils (583249) mean I was given the wrong coils?

Re: Coil replacement

583249 is not a valid part number. Never go by the number stamped on the part--go by the number in the parts book (or box).

You probably don't have the coils adjusted properly. They are able to slide in and out slightly on the mounting screws. They should be adjusted so that the ends of the laminated cores are flush with the machined edges on the posts upon which they sit. If too far out, they will drag on the flywheel magnets. If too far in, you will get weak spark.

Re: Coil replacement

I loosened off the three screws per coil and both coils moved to be flush with the posts. This was all that was needed to allow the flywheel to move freely.

Thank you, you save me some embarrasment at the parts store.
