Re: coil smoking

It is not uncommon to have a direct short in the coil to distributor wire or connector at the points plate. It will keep the motor from starting and severely overheat the coil.

Grounding the points spring or connection from improper assembly will do the same thing.

If your engine uses an igntion by-pass for starting that uses a starter solenoid post, check that there is no voltage at that point with the key off. Sometimes you will get a voltage thru it from an internally shorted solenoid.

If you can find the DC Volt scale on your meter, that will tell you what the voltage is when the key is on. Like Trog says it should be about 9 volts when running.
The point gap could be out a bit if it is running rough. A dwell meter goes a long ways to setting it up, but feeler gauges will work too. Try adjusting the gap to .019" and see if it smooths out.

Re: coil smoking

Well I got some bad news everyone. I found a crack in my block. The boat is sinking  Can anyone tell me where I could look for a block or rebuilt motor? Is there anyway to fix the crack? The crack is right under the intake.

the most common answer would be no.. but if u can get at it and are prepared to have go u dont have much to lose.. any repair wont last forever but it might buy some time.. might even last longer than u think..

if the crack has two visible ends.. drill a small hole (right thru) at each end to relieve the stress points.. grind it out into a vee shape.. dont go right thru.. make sure its all clean and degreased.. fill it with some kind of "wonder metal" in a tube stuff..

u could then go over the lot with epoxy resin.. cover a bigger area than the actual crack..

see if it works.. being as the alternative is a new block anyways u aint got much to lose by trying..

trog100

Re: coil smoking

If it cracked on the outside, it probably cracked on the inside too. You didn't winterize it, it froze, and it broke. Replace the engine and move on. You probably have a raw water cooled engine, so you need a marine replacement.
JB Weld is another of those bandaid fixes that don't last very long. But I suppose it could be half a$$ed together for another couple of hours of running.
Like I say, do it right the first time, or do it again.

Re: coil smoking

I bought the boat this spring for $600 with the motor froze up from setting. So I didn't have anything to do with the winterizing. But you are right.Do it right the first time.I would hate to be out in the middle of the lake and the jb weld break. Is a chevy 2.5 the same as a 3.o chevy? Why does it have to be a marine engine?
