This is a repost of a problem I have been working on and that I have received good help on. I just wanted to repost with a summary so you would not have to read it all. The motor is a 1980 70 Hp Johnson. I have been having intermitent problems with the #3 spark firing. Was told to test the coil before replacing. I connected the #1 coil to the #3 coil and got fire from the #3 coil. I think this told me the coil was not bad? I used a spark tester with a gap of 1/2 inch and got a good ark. I immediately retested and by supprise lost the fire on #3 and #1. Wondering if it was a power pack problem I was told to then disconnected the kill switch to see what happened. I did not get any fire with the switch disconnected which I think tells me the ignition switch is not bad, but there may be a question with the power pack? I took it to the lake to check and see if I could get any fire on more than one plug. I did get intermitent fire on two plugs but never got any fire on all three. I think that #3 never fired. Can anyone give me a possible next best thing to do?

If you don't have any test equipment to check out the system, my first "guess" would be a power pack.

What do i need? I have a multimeter. Can i test voltage or resistance to determine what is not functioning right?

you'll need a dva adapter for you mm unless your mm has this capability...then go to cdielectronics.com/troubleshooting and you'll find the various voltage values for your ignition and charging components

Hi, I would also like to check the power pack on a 1978 70 hp Johnson. What is a DVA adapter and how would I check the PP with a multimeter? Thanks
