Is there a difference between standard ground and plug style ground when updateing from older coils to newer coils on the Jonson 140's, I recently over-hauled a J140TL and of course everything was replaced including the coils, power packs, plug wires, oh rebuilding the carbs-ya! that was done first!?! and redone a second time!!! needless to say the engine ran great but was still haveing a spark problem, when we changed power packs all was fine but when we changed coils something different started to happen, starting was easy'er but a giant loss of WOT throttle was lost when at full throttle- instead of getting five we were getting four. we took the old crusty coils bandaided them back together and luckly we got them back on and out five returned with a vengience. these old crusty lookng coils must have a cousin thats newer and reddy to be bought because I want them for my newer looking J 140 point me to a great place that can steer me in the proper coil conecting department, "Oh" also does it make a difference how the dam sprk plug looks afterward when you hook it up, I mean can you use those car 8mm universal spark plug kits to make your own set of wires or should it be better to use some johnson style special purpose ordering crap to make em work good for the first time use. do I have to use a specil plug to make it work???

Re: Coil Trouble on a J140

The auto plug wires are not for outboard use. If I remember right the outboard wires are solid core or something like that.

I've always used the ones that came with my coils .

So, I've never really looked into the difference.

I have read several posts on this, stating , that the automotive wires are not the ones to use.

One of the experts, may respond with a better description , as to why.

Must use copper core wire, not carbon filament type use for motor vehicles. Any small engine shop or motorcycle dealer has the wire.
