Hello. Are the 2 coils on my 1976 45hp Chrysler the type that has to be grounded
to the engine block, or is the negative wire on the coil already grounding it?
I read there are two types of coils....one needs to be touching the engine
block, and the other doesn't need to.
My two coils are sandwiched on top of each other and bolted to side of block,
but there's no metal contact....it's a thick coat of paint between block and
coils...no bare metal... and the strap holding the coils on is hard plastic. Engine was running great with coils as is....until a few weeks ago.
Your info is appreciated!

You have battery ign.system and + (positive) at coil is connceted to 12V from battery through the ign.keyswitch. - (negative) at coil is connecthed to points and the points is connected to ground. The condenser is parallel connected to the points.

Ok....so what you are saying is that the body of the coils DO NOT need to be touching bare metal on the block for grounding, which means the wire on the negative post on the coil is getting it's ground from wire from points which gets the ground from ignition?
Thankyou!!!
