Coils

Showing my ignorance, where are the coils on a 60 hp Merc, and what do they look like? Is there any way to determine if a coil is bad? i.e resistance measurement.

The motor is a model 60, circa the late 1980's. Last year it developed a bad habit of only running on two cylinders. After some time, 15 min to one hour, the third cylinder would kick in and it would run great for the rest of the day. It was suggested to me that it sounded like a coil was "breaking down".
