Hi all,
I got a cold start question. I have a 2005 180 sport searay/ 135 hp Merc. We use the boat periodically. I would say once every two months. Before taking the boat to the lake, I like to warm up the engine in the driveway to make sure everything is in working order. My ritual is to give it two to three pumps on the throttle and after several turns of the key it will start up.

I read somewhere that for cold start one should follow this procedure. First, crank the engine once. It probably will not start at this point. Then pump the throttle 2 or three times and crank again. It should then start up.

Is this the correct procedure? What is the purpose of the initial crank? Thanks.

Re: cold crank procedure

To clear the air so to speak. Just purges out the old fumes/gas, etc and gives the plugs a chance to clean off before letting in the fresh new stuff...
