When I drop my bot in the water, it has a hard time starting up, I just put a new starter on it last year, and a new battery a few weeks back. It cranks and cranks and cranks trying to start and then after 5-10 minutes of turning it over it starts and dies and then I turn it over again and it will stay running. After that I can turn it off and it'll fire right back up. I have a 86 winner escape with the 3.0. I'm wondering what I can do to fix this because the continuous turning it over drains my battery. The new battery I talked about previously has already died after 3 trips to the boat ramp trying to get it to start. Now I have to keep a spare battery and jump box with me. Any solutions??? Thanks.

are you priming the carb by giving it a few shots of throttle to set the choke and prime?

when you first put the boat in the water, is it after a day, a week, a month of sitting?

if you crank between 5-10 minutes, you will eventually kill your starter as they are not intented to run that long. they get extremely hot after about a minute of cranking.

Yeah I've tried giving it some throttle before starting it, still have to crank it for a few. I don't do it consistently, I do it for a couple seconds and let it sit then try again. I go out usually every weekend depending on weather.

pull the handle out to throttle only position and give it at least 2 full pumps of the throttle. this will set the choke and prime the engine. then normally, move the handle to about half throttle position, then try starting it. if the motor is in a good state of tune, it will start and run at high idle. then after about a minute or so you should be able to back off the throttle, put it in gear and go boating.

one thing to check with the motor off - you may want to have the spark arrestor off, have someone pump the throttle to ensure you see the two streams of fuel being sprayed into the carb throat from the accelerator pump. if you do not see the streams of fuel, you have a fuel system issue

Hi guys. I'm having a similar issue, but not as severe. Just rebuilt carb, along with the entire ignition system. Cleaned out fuel tank, lines, new fuel filters, etc. This engine should run like a champ now, but still remains hard to start when cold ( have to crank engine for 10-20sec. before she catches and runs on her own).
