I am having trouble starting my 1992 200hp Yamaha.I forward the throttle and engage the choke when I start. I didnt have as much trouble in previous years, but i have had four carbed Yam motors and they all were bad at cold starts. When the engine has run even a couple of minutes it will restart instantly. I have a console cover that intefers with the 704 control so I push the neutral button on the side of the binnacle and push the throttle when leaving for storage but I did the same last season .I assume the gas in the carbs is evaporating because of this but I thought that when I pump up the primer ball this would refill the carbs. Help please!!!!

Re: Cold starting problem

Does that engine use a choke or a primer system? If an engine starts well when its hot but not when its cold it is either a problem with incomplete activation of the choke or primer system or your idle mixture is a little on the lean side. If the engine has true choke butterflies, pull off the airboxes and verify that the butterflies are completely closed when actuated.

Re: Cold starting problem

on my 250's there fuel injected for cold starts.
advancing the throttle while trying to start messes up the throttle position sensor and sends mixxed signals to the computer.
not sure if the 200's have the same set up? but my cold start troubles were all fuel injection related.

not sure either if i'd want to store the boat with the throttles wide open like that either?
mike
