Cold weather and merc outboard

I have a question about using my boat in the fall. I have a boat with a Merc outboard that is stored outside on a trailer.

Around here in the fall there can be overnight freezes but with reasonable days. If I want to keep using the boat on the nice days, what do I need to do to the engine to make sure nothing bad happens to it on the nights where there is a freeze? I'm not ready to put the boat up for the season yet.

When I'm done for the season, I'll winterize the motor properly.

Thanks.

For late-season use with freezing temps its a good idea to drain, and then replace the lower unit oil/grease to make sure no water is lurking to freeze.

When you do this you'll be able to tell if water has leaked into the lower unit if it's milky. Black means it has not seen water intrusion.

Keep the motor vertical on the boat once it's in the driveway to allow drainage of water also.

I am having the same issue here in NC. Have a 3.0 OMC I/O that I keep outside on a trailer but still plan to do some fishing late fall as it doesn't really get cold here. Looking at a few cold nights coming up in the next week but dont want to do any damage that I will regret later....Looking for suggestions.

Follow Huron Anglers tips: IT will tell alot if this is a new engine to you or your a new boater! AND REMEMBER not just 32* =FREEZE add wind blowing to that . so maybe use a cover or blanket .ect...(what fish you hitting on that cold and are they in deep water) ?
