I don't see much of an issue. There is no water stored or kept in an OB engine and so other then some thick foot oil (until it warms up again), what else is there to cause problems?

if you are going to be using her throughout the winter then, no, but if you are storing her until spring, you might want to read up on some of the winterization stickies/threads.

When I store mine for the winter, after winterizing-I turn the flywheel an extra 3/4 of a turn by hand. You will see a very small amount of extra water flow out the lower unit. It's the last small amount of water trapped inside the impeller housing. Not really a problem from a freezing standpoint, as the impeller will expand if the trapped water freezes. Again, it is not a problem if you don't do this.

So long as you are sure theres not much water in the LU gear oil casing itl be fine

What Bosun said, if there is water in the lower unit (where it is supposed to be full of oil) and it freezes, it may bust the gearcase due to expansion.

Yup. Just make sure there's no water in the gearcase.

I am still running my motor and it was -1 degree the other day.....I am using it tomorrow and it is warming up to 8 degrees....

question about winterization...how many months of sitting would be allowed before no winter storage-fogging is needed?? basically...how long of non use is considered too long for not Fogging the motor?
thanks

You are certainly more tolerant of cold weather than I. If I let an engine sit for a couple of months in outside weather, I'd winterize it. Sounds like you use it multiple times each winter month. In that case, winterizing is not a worthwhile expense. I would absolutely change the gearcase oil each fall, prior to winter- just to be sure there is no water in the gearcase from summer running.

You a heartier breed than me. My god that's freakin cold!

I bet the motor loves it. Assuming it's a 2 stroke that is. I know mine do. Best top speed was on a 39 deg day. And lemme tell ya that's awful cold for this ole Floda boy. Member my eyes were tearing so bad it looked slugs had crawled out'n slimed the sides of my face. But I digress.

Yeah if you're gonna use it why bother fogging it.

i will assume that the -1 temp was in metric/celsius, but with that being said, i see commercial fishermen running obs here when its -20, they follow the larger boats that break salt water ice in the sheltered coves to make it to open water.

If the outboard is down and in the water even though there is ice around the boat, the lower unit won't freeze and bust 'cause it's still in the water. Been there.
