Common Sense-Gone!

Obituary

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend by the name of CommonSense who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valued lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm and that life isn't always fair.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not kids, are in charge). His health began to rapidly deteriorate when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch, and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student only worsened his condition. It declined even further
when schools were required to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student, yet were not allowed to advise the parents of a student that wanted to have an abortion.

Finally, Common sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses and criminals received better
treatment than their victims. Common Sense finally gave up the ghost after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, spilled bit in her lap, and was awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by two stepbrothers; My Rights and Ima Whiner.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

Sad but true...

Common Sense, Truth, Trust, Discretion, Responsibility, and Reason...

These words don't seem to mean anything to most people anymore... :(

He will be sorely missed as will his relitives that passed before him. Unfortunatly I have little good to say about his surviving kin. Familys like that are become a rarity while there surviving members seam to be reproducing at an astonishing rate.

Well now,

how often have I reflected on the same but seldom have I been able to articulate my thoughts so succiently. There is so much more to the post than what meets the eye. This is a topic for a late night around a camp fire, in the middle of the bush, with close friends.

I am curious djohns19, often these thoughts manifest as a result of some fresh experience that causes us to throw up our hands in exasperation. Care to Share?

Cheers
Andrew

Andrew,

Actually, it is a compilation of small events that build to a point of overflowing.

What it really boils down to is that in my line of employment, I get to see so called highly educated people make stupid decisions everyday.

The reason they are stupid decisions is that they are not based on fact. They are based on emotion.

We, as a society, are losing our ability to think. Everything must be had-now. Thus we do not stop to consider he consequences of our actions. It's turning out, more and more, that we do not have to be responsible. Some attorney somewhere will make sure that someone else is to blame.

An example.

I watched a news report, the other night, were a teenage boy had hit a father of three head on and killed him.

The news reporters interviewed the father of the teenager who went on to say what a wonderful kid he was and how he never done anything wrong and his promising football career was cut short.
They never ONCE mentioned anything about the victim. That entire news organization goes after the emotional side of the story-forget the facts. By the way, all the anchors and most of the reporters are female.

I flip the channel to the Fox affiliate and get the real skinny. The kid was a jerk, acting like a jerk and was driving like an idiot. There were numerous eyewitnes accounts.

I rest my case, forget facts, go with feelings.

Re: Common Sense-Gone!

I suppose one needs to differentiate between education and wisdom. Education does not automatically give one common sense and or wisdom. As someone once said "Some people are wise and some are otherwise". As you point out emotion has to a large degree taken the place of good judgement.

As the media chases ratings the content has become more and more shocking/sensationalist and real in many instances. The overwhelming amount of information via the various media networks has in many instances meant that we are unable to process all the facts and to test these against the truth. This has reduced many to the position of consumer of information rather than discerner of information.

There is a wonderful expression in the new testament....can't remember exactly where but I will attempt to paraphrase it. The apostle Paul speaking to one of the churches "the saints at Berea were more noble than you as they took the word I fed them and spent the time to establish the integrity of the word".

It is said that we now live in the "age of man" which simply put has man as a god, answerable to his own selfish desires and whims.

The worst part is that our parents complained of the moral and ethical decay and now so do we. The rate of decay seems to be speeding up and none of us apparently are able to arrest the trend nevermind reverse it.

Time to change.

"IF WE KEEP ON DOING, WHAT WE'VE ALWAYS DONE, WE'LL ALWAYS GET THE SAME RESULT"

In closing one of my distributor's and close friend for 15 years recently phoned me to say that he was throwing in the towel. We along with another were the two major creditors and were owed a tidy sum of money.

The other creditor's Managing Director then decided to get vicicous and rather than waiting for the "liqudation" process to proceed at normal pace did the following. Ignored the "without predjudice" meetings between our attorneys and unethically divulged the contents of these meetings. He also chased him and his family through town endangering their lives (car chase). Independantly launched an investigation into his personal life at great cost to both the creditors and the distributor. Send out the word to all inductry that he should under no circumstances be employed as he was not to be trusted. This despite the fact that he had voluntarily called us in we had his commitment to pay even though it would take some time.

With all avenues of generating an income closed down my friend managed to last four months before blowing his brains out.

I hope the big wheel turns.......

Cheers

Cheers

Re: Common Sense-Gone!

jeez andrew, sorry to hear of that situation. and best wishes for the guys family. all i can say is:

how profound (of a lesson for all)

i think it is also good to mention the part about -people now think they are all gods. it should be the other way around - we're all servants. if not to god, then to each other. :)
