Working on an old 500mhz compaq, basement computer.

Hard drive is making a VERY bad knocking/clicking sound, evident that it is very soon going to crash.

So I need to remove it, mirror the contents to a replacement HD, so I don't have to start with a fresh install.

16 friggin screws later, I have the hard drive out. The engineers made it so that the side plate gets removed, then rear screws for the other piece that covers 3 sides. Then un-clip the front cover, then there are 5 more screws holding on the FRONT of the 3 side cover.

Then a "convienent" release tab to slide the hard drive out the FRONT of the case instead of the inside.

I'll give Dell and IBM cudo's. The new IBM machines we have at work, they are the size of a VCR, I was leary at first to work on them until I realize, everything hinges open, not a single screw on the thing. Dell's usually work the same way, they have finally put some thought into their cases.

.......I hear machine #2 booting up now, time to transfer some files.

BLEAH!

/rant

theScrumbler.....
Yeah, I missed something.....
.....don't do computer maintance while drinking, takes longer.

After looking at it, didn't NEED to remove the side cover to get it to slide out the front, just needed to remove the front cover. Side cover only needs to come off to get ot backplane.

It's still a stupid design and my rant stands. :)

Remember the IBM Aptiva mini-tower cases? I looked like an idiot once in front of a customer spending a good 10 minutes getting it open.

On my PowerMac G5s, I just lift a lever to open the case then twist another one to release the drive. Done.

There's something to be said for good mechanical design.

Re: Compaq Computer Rant

That's how the new ibm desktops are. One release to hing up the case, another and the power supply hinges up out of the way giving room to cpu,ram and 5.25 bay

flip one release and the floppy drive comes out.

PCI daughter board pops out, one lever to release the cards, no screws.

Only down side, they made it SO small, I installed a dual head vid card the other day for running 3 monitors, had to remove the floppy drive to get that last 1/8" I needed for the card to fit.

who needs more than one floppy drive in the building anyway, that's what the network is for, map someone elses.

I think those packard bells were the worst to work on. Nothing was easy to get to. They even had propietary RAM!

They don't call them "Comcraps" for nothing.
