my daughters lap top quit.

when you turn it on it goes to the safe start screen saying it didnt start correctly.

then it runs a check on a "fat32" file and then does the same thing over and over again, until you push a button to cancel the test.

then it says "bad_pool_caller" and i had to take a picture to be able to read the rest . it basically says to remove any newly installed hardware/software. disable bios memory options, etc...........util finally it says start in safe mode.

then it has a technical information thing but i cant make out all the #s in my picture.

then it says "beginning physical memory dump"-----and under that "physical memory dump complete" and under that contact your sys adm or tech support for further assistance.

my main questions are:

can i do anything to fix this on my own?

do i just need to reinstall a program?

what caused this?
--------------------------------

my friends are telling me its the blue screen of death, and that my computer has crashed.

any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

The blue screen of death... not a good thing. If it is possible to get it boot up at all in safe mode or using last known good configuration, that would be a bonus. If not, you may be looking at wiping everything out and starting from scratch. To do that, you have to get into the BIOS screen (usually a keystroke like Esc or F9) right when it turns on to check that it boots on CD-ROM first. Put in your Windows CD and start up your computer. It will start Windows from the CD. You *might* be able to repair the existing Windows installation but if there isn't anything on the hard drive you need to recover, I wouldn't bother with a repair and start from scratch. Reformat the hard drive and then install Windows. If that doesn't work, the problem may be the hard drive itself. They do fail after time, and it might be that time....

F1, F2, F10 and Delete keys are others to open BIOS compaq used F10 a lot.
FAT32,??? If you reload and the OS supports it (2000, XP, vister) go NTFS.
If you have files you need to recover, download knoppix and learn to use it enuf to get your files. knoppix is a Linux live distribution, others would work as well, and it does not need be installed. Good luck!

This is fairly typical of a processor overheating.I would insure that the cpu fan is working and the airway is not clogged/obstructed in some way before you spend too much time with recovery.
Your work will be in vain if it runs hot again.Ron G

I will start with the first problem you described. ^^^

This sounds like Windows is checking your hard drive. Either your hard drive is so messed up that the utility can't fix it and runs forever or you're not giving it enough time.

Any errors you may be getting after this are probably due to the state of the hard drive.

Do you have a backup of your data?

I believe all Compaq's come with a recovery disc. If this is a software issue insert the disc and choose the recover option saving all hard drive info. If it is a mechanical issue with the drive the recovery disc should be able to block bad sectors and rearrange your info to get the computer going. If your hard drive is failed or the processor overheating those are mechanical issues you will have to open up the case to get a look at.

ok when i try in safe mode it trys then flashes a black screen so fast i can barely tell it has words on it.

the it runs another test on the file system then says found no problems .

then it says checking file system on c--ntfs file--
and says one of your disks needs to be checked for consistancy.

stages 1,2,and 3 run finish and it trys to restart and does the same thing over again and again.

fan and works and the and it makes a noise when you turn it on like some thing inside is coming on.

Sorry, you're having so much trouble. If you don't have any critical data on it you may still be in good shape. Even though you don't have the discs, the recovery software could be in a hidden partition that's accessible by a certain keystroke when you turn it on. If that's available you could use that to restore the system to the way it was when you first took it out of the box. If not, the manufacturer will usually mail you the discs for a nominal fee. The restore programs are usually simple enough that you don't have to be a computer geek to use them. If you can do that you'll save a lot of money.

It seems to me that if your hard drive is good, windows has still marked it as "dirty". Once the disk checker does its thing it should remove the "dirty" flag. Sometimes this happens and causes the problem you describe. Fixing it may be more than you're comfortable with though.

It varies. Try powering on the laptop and tapping F10. I googled that one up.

Search "compaq presario recovery partion" for more options.
