Hello Guys me again...... Question for you all. Can I replace a shot 1992 Johnson outboard with a 1973 Evinrude outboard without any major problems??? Both are the same HP at 60

Re: Compatability

Are you talikg about the motor as a whole or just the powerhead?

As a whole -- yes. same bolt pattern, same controls. As long as youre sure its a 73 and not a 72.

Just remember your going from a 56 cid to a 49 cid motor.

Re: Compatability

the person I am buying it from said it was a 73...... ANd you are saying from a 56 cid to a 49 cid......Sorry what does that mean and yes as a whole.....There is some scoring on the inside of the middle cylinder onthe 92 and the shop said it would not be worth it to fix because it will just happen again in about 2 years.. they refuse to do it I guess

Re: Compatability

Oops! My bad! The early 60 hp was either a 1970 or 71. For some reason I had 65 on the brain. You can bolt it to the boat but youll have to use the controls for that year. That was a hydro-electric shift.

If it were mine I'd rebuild the 92. Probably the block is boreable and the crank and rods are OK. The middle cylinder, most likely, got scored from the motor running lean in the mid range. So yes -- it will happen again if you dont correct that situation. Not that uncommon on the 56 cid motors.

Actually now that I htink of it The other motor is a 65 hp. And total cost to fix the 92 is well over what the 73 will cost......Easier to just change it
