Did new rings, almost ready to put powerhead back on. When I turn the flywheel there's a whistle sound coming through the bottom starter bolt hole and when I put my finder over it I can feel compression. Also, there is no "end" to the hole, it goes into the crankcase. Was thinking VRO but I see that's a different mount & hole. Any Ideas? I'm having trouble uploading pics right now.

So problem will be solved if you install the starter??? Or am I not reading this correctly? I guess you realize there is supposed to be compression in the crankcase, right?

I guess but why is the hole open? It makes no sense to me for a starter mount.

No problem hopefully there will be more opinions. I’m just trying to catch it now if it’s not normal. Sorry for not being clear in original post.

Here's my opinion.-----Just looked at a 1984 block and the hole is drilled through.----Looked at a 1994 block and it is drilled through.----No need to look at 20 more of them.-----It is not a problem or a concern.----They made thousands of these motors and they all ran just fine.-----Just a question here.----You are putting new rings on old pistons ??-----If so I have to ask why ??

Thank you!!

Re-ringed only because of money. Crank was pitted along with two rods and upper crank bearing. I replaced all crank bearings and got a used crank and two used pistons/rods. I'm in about $850 including tools and I still need a battery and some fuel line and a timing light...

In my opinion putting new rings in those worn ring groves is a mistake.------But then I have looked at ring grooves using a microscope at 10X magnification.----- I know it is a mistake to put new rings in there.!!
