I'm selling my boat and a prospective buyer has requested a compression test on the outboard motor (1994 175hp Evinrude Intruder).

-Is the tester something that I can buy? or rent?
-How much would a shop charge to do this?
-What should I look for? Pressure drop? Continuous pressure?

Motor runs awesome, but not sure how to prove it to the buyer. Thanks!

Hi , you can buy the guage at marine dealers & just about any automotive store & dealers around here usualy charge around $50.00 to do a complete diagnosis the buyer if seriously interested may want to split the cost with you or you may want to do it for your own satisfaction ,good luck c.b. :)

This is a fairly simple deal. If your buyer is really interested, schedule an inspection at the nearest dealer. The buyer pays for it. It's his inspection, it's for his own good. This deal is good for him and you. Don't monkey around with stuff you don't know about and don't let the buyer monkey with your stuff. Hire a third party. There will be a lot less room for arguement.

Re: Compression Test Basics?

Thanks for the info. My local marine mechanic said that he would do it for me while I waited (no appt. necessary) for only $20. Pretty good deal.

Called NAPA and they wanted $50 for the compression guage.

One question: My 175 Evinrude has never slipped at all (if anything it's top speed has actually increased slightly over the years) and out of the hole it feels as strong as ever. Would a loss in compression be noticeable? Thanks!

man i hate it when everyone jumps on the "take it to the dealer" bandwagon, shop around for the guage i paid 20 bucks at discount auto....then sell the guage back on ebay if not needed in the future.

Peg - Suggestion - Ask your mechanic to write down the results on a shop work order for you and make copies in case this deal dosen't go through.
