I've looked online at a variety of compression test tools. Princess Auto has them from $14 to $80. Can someone recommend one?

Preferably from a Canadian outlet so I can go get one.

Re: compression test tool

We have 2 testers. One is a cheap and cheerful one from a local auto store. The second one is a "Snap On" and expensive. Both are as good and as accurate as each other. The box on the Snap On version is a lot nicer though but not the function.

Most at any auto parts will do, you can also order on-line from snap-on or matco.Sears is also ok.basically you are just compareing 1 cylinder to the next. as long as you use same test on all cylinders. I have three of them, a cheap one, a middle of the road and a nice one. they all read with in 3% of one another

I paid between 30 and 40 bucks for mine...looks like the one TD has....but not sure of the mfg....like the rest said...dont think it matters much, but it is an invaluable tool.

They all work as well as the other. Just get the one that threads into the spark plug hole. The ones that you have to hold onto wile pushing it into the spark plug hole are hard to use.

Ok, thanks. Of course that makes sense that its more of a tool of comparison than needing a perfect read out.

Re: compression test tool

When you test, you want to pull ALL the spark plugs, make sure the throttle is wide open and kill the ignition.

Then make sure you turn the engine over for at least 5 compression strokes, each cyl.

Thanks for the extra information! I would have done it wrong. :(

Re: compression test tool

Friend of mine uses that one as well. No issues and a respectable price.
Get it before the "HST" kicks in !!:)

What difference would that make. HST 13% is still 5% + 8% =13%
