Ok, for the computer builder/geek:

I'm building a new system, and I was looking at system memory. There is a TON to choose from these days.

I will be using an Asus A7N8X Deluxe board that needs PC3200 DDR ram (2.5CL or 2CL)512meg.

I typically use Crucial ram, but they are out of stock, and their ram is only a 3CL. I'd like to get some a little faster.

I've looked a quite a few from cheapo generic to top name. Does anyone know the secret behind all the memory? Is it all the same?

Where do you buy from?

Thanks,

H.

I'm using Samsung PC3200 on a Soltek board. My processor is only 333 FSB, while the memory is 400, so the memory is slowed down and is working without trouble. I have O'ced the Processor to 400 (200 in bios) and it worked fine except for getting too warm. I've got a different CPU cooler coming and then I should run 400 fine. The memory ran fine at the higher speed.

I test it with Prime95 and will slow it down if there are any errors.

I have been buying my ram from Accubyte.com ..there are near chicago IL...

They always had great prices, and I've ordered MANY parts from them, I had a problem once with a motherboard and processor, they honored their warranty, took it back... had another problem, they still honored warranty... Finally found 300watt power supply just didn't have the power it used to have and it was my problem all along, but instead of tellimg me to F off... they stuck to their goal of satisfiing their customer... So I highly recomend them.

As far as brand, I never even questioned, I just asked the guy on the phone to recomend what was good from their stock, and I've never had a problem. When I called to get more ram for the same system, I just asked him to look up what I had ordered before to make sure I had a good match.

Not all memory is the same. Make sure you get the same memory in all slots. If they are the same size, make sure you get the same number of chips on the DIMMS. they can be the same size matrix, but still be different number of chips and cause problems.

Crucial always has good memeory by anyone's standards. Golden Ram is also always good. Kingston is good, but I ahve seen some issues with some types of boards. I have had good luck with Viking memory also.

Watch out for cheap ram. I have a example here where the chips have been sanded down and remarked to try to fake Siemens chips. Better to pay more and have less intermittent problems. I keep the examples because people don't believe me until I show how they we sanded and resoldered. I can also tell you about the most pirated product in thw world a few years ago. Microsoft mice. That is why you now see a hologram tag on the cord of each Microsoft mouse.

H,

When you get a chance, go to PCMag and search the topic. You should come across a few studies which show that the majority of memory on the market is defective. The stuff fails randomly and people curse Microsoft thinking it's the OS. If I can't buy Crucial I'd consider Kingston.

Want really FAST ram? Build a system with based on Rambus Ram... expensive but you can get 533Mhz memory speeds. It's closer to SRAM than typical DRAM at that speed. The SIMMs are encased in metal to disapate the higher heat generated.

My last two systems were Rambus based. I had an 833Mhz processor that would out perform most systems based on 1.5 Ghz systems due to the faster memory bus speeds.

Sorry SBN, You had a question? I have not had much time to get to the board. Between the 10 projects at home, the new business that my compnay bought, the projects at work, I have been working non-stop.

Memory and power supplies are two things that case more problems than anything else. If you want a stabel system, bet good ones. Good power supplies can be had at www.pcpowerandcooling.com
