Re: ???computer problems.

Ron, was the DSL on protection also? If not then the surge likely went through it to the CPU. Is there a network card added, or an on-board? If its an add in card, try removing it. Also with the case open, hit the power and watch the fan/s if they try to go then stop (crowbar condition) the power supply COULD be good, if nothing happens the power supply MAY be dead. Unplug things and try again.

$450  What brand of computer is it? You can buy new ones at walmart and other places for cheaper than that! If it is a fairly new pc, you can buy a new motherboard and processor for under $200 dollars!

Actually, I really don't know anything about computers it was a lucky guess. ;) :D

Ron, we have a 5 year old Dell Dimension with bumped up memory and a big hard drive and its still compatible with everything out there. Mr. Ladyfish runs autocad on it too.

It requires a cleaning right now but other than that we are extremely happy with it since we added the XP Operating System. It should keep you happy for a couple of years but thats probably about it.

Good luck!

Re: ???computer problems.

Ron, that new Dell sounds like a good pc. Check the warranty and make sure it has a decent one. If it only has the 90 day warranty, then get the extended or find something else! You also might need to know what kind of hard drive it has in it, if the new has all SATA drives, then you might not be able to add the old one to it. Also you need to know what kind of RAM the new has and what the old one has, some kinds of RAM do not mix. Post what you find out and we can help you out.

edit: Are you sure you didn't mean XPS 400? If so, you won't be able to add the old RAM to it. That pc has DDR2 and you don't have DDR2 in your old machine. They DO NOT mix. According to Dell's web site, it does have SATA hard drives, and has one IDE channel, so you can possibly add the old hard drive to it.

Re: ???computer problems.

Unless you are doing some really intense things on your computer, 2 gigs of ram is plenty. If you guys just play on the net, read emails and burn cd's, then you definately have planty. Good job on the warranty!
