Re: Computer Tech needed please

Hi Spinner,
Just now read your message and wonder if you are having a software or hardware problem, or both? Yours is a laptop, haven't worked on that one hardware wise before, but might still be able to help. Software shouldn't be a problem, just depends on your problem?
Have to run to the parts store, but will check here when I get back.
I'll be glad to help if I can.... I don't work in the computer industry anymore, except for friends.... and then it's all free work. But, I have actually earned money in the past as a computer tech  so not to worry. If it's not something I can help with, I'll let you know.
If you include a telephone number I can call you when I get back. I have unlimited long distance.

Thanks BW, it's the cpu fan has quit working and was just needing to how hard it is to get to it.

They are wanting 100bucks to replace it.

I can get the fan, for 25 and might not even be the fan. Might be a wire or something.

I've replaced HD's on similar Toshiba laptops, should be that big a problem to replace the fan. You just have to be good at remembering how everything goes back together!

SBN,

There is a SW utility to turn the fans on Tecras on and off. Do you have it? Did you try it? If you don't have it go to Toshibas website and find the downloads for that model and find that utility.

You may be able to find the R&R instructions for the fan on the Toshiba website.

Feel free to email me.

Re: Computer Tech needed please

Just got back and see that you've had a couple of others with good input.... Laptops are a 'bear' to take apart and get all the pieces to fit back inside... tiny Japanese fingers do it better :D

I've uploaded an exploded drawing of your laptop according to what you listed and also a list of part numbers. You might be able to see how to disassemble it to get to the fan if you need to replace it.

Let me know when you have copied the page so that I can take it down. Just click on the link and when you are asked, you can just choose "Open" or "Save". If you choose open, you'll see it before it downloads to your computer.

Hope it helps. If you can work on motors, I'm certain you can replace the fan on that little bitty thing :D

Nope BW, says word pad has error and it would not open.
If I could get this thing into the promp mode so I could c:\dos\tsetup I might be able to see if I can turn it on and off.

P.S. Ralph, you got mail.

Hi agaIN,
The file should open in a browser window for you... just give me a couple minutes and I'll put in in a regular page.....

If you want to call me at 256 582-0363, I'll call you right back and 'talk' you through getting your computer into the setup mode.

Re: Computer Tech needed please

Well I got it into the prompt mode and when I entered my prompt, it says it is no longer in system.

Everything else comes back as win95, when I am running winME on it, so I would say that has a lot to do with not finding the right prompts.

Edit Woaaaaaaaa, what a bunch of little parts.
My hands are to big for them little things.

I like big things. :D

Maybe let pro fix it for me.
I can get fan, so maybe get it and take to someone and let them check it to make sure thats what it is.

Thanks BW.
I am going to print them out for future reference though.

Glad I could help... I'll leave the pages up for a while in case you need to save them again. I have more room on my server than I thought. When I run out of room, I delete files no longer needed.

SBN - no mail

I'm a little confused. Did you try the SW utility to turn the fan on? As I recall, Tecra fans don;t come on automatically. The utility gets loaded and runs as part of the boot process.

Got your mail Ralph, and got into it and found it was set to "Quite" mode, so I reset it to "Performance" mode and Wala, it started working.

Checked it again this morning and still working so I guess I have it fixed for now.

Again, thanks to you all for the help.

BTW, you got mail again, if the aliens don't get it. :D
