Re: cone clutch big job????

They won't shift right with water in the gear lube. You need to get the milky oil out and new in and check it. You may have to flush out the milky oil.
I would also pressure check the drive when you get the propshaft seal replaced to make sure that is the only place it was leaking.
Did you ever pull the drive and check the bellows for water. That may be your problem for both engine and drive problems in your other posts.

Thank you for you quick reply.
The engine is going 100% thank good
I have never pulled the drive the belllows look spot on from what I can see of them.
I replaced the gear oil thinking it may be that but it did not change anything still the same when I put it back in the water. I changed the seal 2 year ago, this only starting happening in the past few week (sorry for the long post)
While I had it out of the water last time. I disconnected the shift cable and put it in manualy, while in reverse i could only turn the prop anti clock wise and would lock the other way... But when in forward it would turn but very hard and would eventuly lock....

Thanks Don in advance I'm driven mad with this thing

Looking at the bellows from the outside tells you nothing. The drive should be pulled at least once a year to check alignment and GREASE THE COUPLER SPLINES or you will be finding yourself pulling the engine to replace the coupler.
The shift cone has probably slipped enough to finally damage it. I posted the link to the service manual in your other thread about the propshaft seal. It will explain what is needed to replace the shift cone.

Sorry 'bout that. I new your name was in it, just assumed  it was your thread also.
In that case, that may be the wrong manual. What is your full engine model number or serial number and I'll check the manual.

Don from what I have described do you also think it is the cone clutch that is at fault in my gearbox.
Thanks once again,
Colm

It's possible, if the shifter itself wasn't putting the drive all the way into gear, and it slipped each time, it would wear the cone clutch. Did you check to see if the shifter puts it all the way into gear?

Re: cone clutch big job????

it looks like it is, i will be taking it out in next week or two from the marina..i will be replacing the shift cable first as the lst mec who was at it the same fella who wreaked my seal housing for the prop shaft, used a shift cable that was to long and there is a bit of a loop in it before it goes into the pipe down to the shifter.

Don S Thanks
