Interesting question... I didn't know for sure so I checked through my parts books (78/92).

Yep... Identical units.

Yes they are the same shape and size.----Will fit.------But the early ones used a 3 wire motor .----Therefor you need to have a look / check what is installed on your motor now.

thanks for the info and quick responses! since I got that info so quick and correct I will try again. I bought a pontoon boat without a motor last year. I also bought an old boat that had a 1977 Johnson 115hp without power trim. I ran it like that all summer but it was a pain having to raise and lower the motor because it was kept on the water at a rented dock. I also bought a 1978 Johnson 115hp parts motor last year that came with power trim that has the three wire motor. so when I brought the pontoon home for the winter I installed the power trim from the 78 motor and it fit fine but the center piton/shaft doesn't work. so I'm going to buy one off ebay and just wanted to confirm that other units will work. so after saying all that heres a few more questions for you. the first unit I'm looking at buying is off a 1989 Johnson 60hp but it doesn't come with a motor so do you know if my motor will fit on it? the next unit is off a 1990 evinrude xp 150hp with 2 wire motor. and the last one is off a 190hp evinrude 3 wire motor.
