Hi all, broke the main recoil spring and replaced it then noticed later that there's supposed to be a "retainer spring" in there somewhere but can't figure out where it sits? Works good now but afraid this will somehow come back and bite me in the @$$.
Tks for helping anyone.

There are two other springs involved with the recoil. One is a spring clip that slips around the starter pinion for friction. The other is located on the throttle arm and operates the lock-out to protect from starting with the throttle set too high (.ie in gear). The recoil won't work without the first one, and it may lock up sporadically without the second one.

Tks for the reply Chinewalker. The second spring in question is to prevent engine turning when the throttle is open too far, that one I'm ok with. The other, you say slips around the starter pinion? I imagine the starter pinion is the underside center of the starter pulley? There's a small metal pin that acts as a hook but I can't figure out how to get the two spring parts onto that one small metal pin, or maybe there's only one of the two that slips onto that pin? Both springs ends have curled ends that seem to be the same size so I can't see how one would slip over the other. A diagram would be nice. On the parts list they show the two springs but not how they fit together.

For the parts diagram of the starter there are two springs. The main starter spring, and the pinion spring. The pinion spring is a slip fit on the pinion and is #8 in the attached diagram. The pinched end goes over the arm near where the 9 is pointing in the diagram. The spring on the throttle arm (which you noted in your post) is the only other spring involved with the recoil...
