I have removed a 2002 mercury 25hp and installed a 1977 55hp Evinrude. i'm trying to connect if possible the mercury tachometer to my Evinrude motor. The mercury wiring plug has 5 holes B,C at the top A, E. and D at the bottom. the Evinrude has a plug under the key switch on the control box with 3 hole i am un-sure if thay are marked. Has anyone tryed this?

Welcome to iboats.

Moved this into Outboard Non-repair because it is about using a Merc tach on an Evinrude. Dockside Chat wasn't the right section.

I don't know if the Merc tach will work on the Evinrude. What connections are on the back of the Mercury tach and does it have a rotary switch for selecting the type of sender or pulse input?

I think it depends on the type and year of the tach. Older tachs had a special connection for Johnson/Evinrude engines. Newer ones use the same as for the Mercs. Easiest is to go to the OEM web page and see if your new motor is listed as an application for that tach.

Honetly - tachs just aren't that much money. If you can afford it and find one that matches your gauges, I would replace it with something that uses the 3 connector. I had a similar problem, went from a Johnson to a Mercury. Now I have a Fabia tach :)
