I have a 178C GPSMAP and West Marine VHF500 DSC VFH radio. GPS wiring shows a data in (white) and data out (green). VHF wiring shows a data in (green) and no data out. So do I just connect the green and the white is for something else into the GPS? Is the VHF supposed to communicate back to the GPS or just receive the GPS data? Then the VHF wiring has a DC13.8v and GND for GPS Ant. do i need to use these in this application.

You realy got me thinking on this one!!! I went through the manual to my Navman. As long as both your gps and dcs vhf are NMEA compatible the data out from your gps hooks into your vhf. The data in is only used for other functions, wich you may not have such as locating other boats on your gps screen, through the signal recieved on your vhf, unless your dcs vhf supports this I think the wire you need to worry about is the data out.

Jim

I think you need to connect the two green wires. You want the GPS data out (green) to go to the VHF data in wire (green).

OK that's what I am going with Data out from GPS data in to VHF DSC radio (both green) is the only connection I have to make to allow for DISTRESS call to function. I'm installing this weekend we'll see how it goes Thank you.

Glen

The radio has a DC jack and accessory cord, the acc. cord only has the following:

orange - ext. speaker +
black - ext. speaker - (gnd)
red - dc +13.8v
green - GPS data in
brown - PA+
bare - PA- (gnd)
blue - NC

Garmin tech support sent me this:
The GPS will need to be set to NMEA In/NMEA Out.

GPSMAP 178C - Radio

Blue (Data Out) - NMEA Positive input
Black (Ground) - NMEA Negative input

Not sure how that matches up with the radio wiring?

Tommays is right it does need two wires, but as long as both are run off the same battery then the second wire is the radios and Gps dc ground wire.
