Hi,

I had to pull the motor on a Four Winns and since I have the manual I did not make a note of where the wires attach on the coil. I figured the color codes would help me. Unfortunately the wires are discolored and now I am confused.

There is a purple and black wire coming from the distributor. I have them on opposite sides. I have three other wires. Two of them appear to be live when the ignition is turned on, and the other, which appears to have an inline resistor.

Can anyone help me figure out where the various wires connect ?

Thanks

jon

Black wire from dist goes to the - (neg) terminal on the dist. (power goes from the coil to the dist to ground via the points) Purple w/blk goes to the + (pos) side of the coil. Tach wire goes to the - side. Elect choke wire goes to the + side (if so equipped).

Hi Don,

Thanks a lot for the info, it is very helpful. I do have another question though. Is there a way I can tell which is the wire from the assist solenoid using a multimeter. The jacket on the wires are discolored and I cant really tell which one is purple. I do have one wire with a connector on it so I assume from the diagram that it si the tach wire. I need to figure out which the other two are.

thanks in advance for the help.

If you scrape the wires a little the color is usually more visible.

Yes, you can trace wires with a meter. i guess the first thing needed is the full model number (including the letters after the 5.0FL)
even a serial number will help. Might as well look at the right manual.
