Considering buying a 1990 Grady White w/ a 1990 Yamaha

I am interested in buying a 1990 24' Grady White. The engine is a 1990 200hp yamaha. I am very nervous purchasing a motor almost as old as i am. I am the proud owner of a 1992 force which I rebuilt and still wont run on a hull that came with a rotted floor. I did a compression test and all cylinders were 90psi and one was 89. This compression seems low for a 200 hp motor? The force I rebuilt was 3 cylinders and the compression was supposed to be 120.

The guy also only owned it for one year. He says its because his wife is pregs and I met her and he wasnt lying. Still makes me nervous.

Compression is not a function of horse power. That is, a motor having more HP does not necessarily have a higher compression ratio.

The compression values you stated are all above the Yamaha minimums for even a brand new two stroke.

Some of the older models will go on forever while many much newer motors may take a dump. It is always a bit of a crap shoot when buying a used motor. But the vast majority don't have problems. At least for a number of years anyway.

Buy the boat for just the boat alone if the boat is what you want. Then if the motor craps out simply fix it or re-power. Or sell it as is for about what you paid for it, given that you paid for just what the boat might be worth.

No thanks....its pre-Sea-V2 hull that is badly under powered.

Grady’s are power hogs. That boat needs a bare min. 225 hp. A buddy has the 94 version of that boat with a 275hp Verado that does alright. Really needs twin 150hp to be happy.

Yup, that Grady is a horsepower sponge. You'll blow that old motor up quicker than you got his wife pregnant

How come the motor did not blow years before?
