Considering buying a 1994 Bayliner 180LS W/ 1994 120 Force, nervous about the motor

I am new to Force outboards and I am nervous that this engine maybe more trouble than what it's worth. Can anyone give me any advice on what to look for on this motor specifically so I don't buy a lemon. I am a first time boat owner and would hate to be out thousands of dollars watching my boat sit in the garage. The boat looks to be well taken care of but, I've heard horror stories before about these motors. Thanks.

I had A friend that bought a well looked after, one owner car and it turned out to be a dud. Can happen to anyone. See if you can do a compression check. if you can, and the compression is good, and the price is right, go for it! Force outboards are as dependable as the owner that sevices them, as per any other brand. The reputation stinks because not everyone that bought a Force took care of them- entry level boat to entry level boat owners.

Once you buy it, assuming compression is good, there are some things you can do yourself with little more than a set of sockets. I do my own service/maintenance etc on a 1988/125hp, and I am more than happy with it. As for compression numbers as such, I dont know ex factory what it would be, but my 125 is running 135psi on all cylinders. So long as the reading isnt 135,135,130,90, (for example) you'll be fine- oh, and parts are mostly and readily available. And you have the support of the worlds best forum. Welcome Aboard.

Force bashing is one of the favorite sports here on iboats, but it is mostly in fun.

Actually, Force outboards are pretty basic technology; simple and uncomplicated. No less reliable than other outboards of that era. They are usually easy to fix, if you can locate a good parts source, which is not a slam dunk. Don't expect marinas and shops to be eager (or even willing) to work on them, though. You should expect to do your own maintenance. With a good Service Manual and the many Force expert helpers on iboats that is not a scary thing.

The very best thing you can do---assuming compression ratio is good on all cylinders--- is to assume that anything that can be out of adjustment IS out. Set everything to factory specs using the FAQs sticky at the top of the forum. Then change any normal maintenance items like lower unit oil, water pump impeller and fuel pump diaphragm. Install a fuel filter between the pump and carbs.

Once this is done, the engine should serve you admirably well.

All, I've owned an '86 Bayliner/125Force for a number of years............been happy w/no problems, once the the trim/tilt was fixed (normal wear). I would not be hesitant to buy another Force!!!
