I have a 1995 Mercury outboard with oil tank on engine...With that said, this is the problem..

When I launch in the cold morning, normally below 50 degrees, I turn the key and an alarm goes off under the console. The sound was initially somewhat like the staticy sound of a fax connection. It then morphed to a constant high pitched sound, not too loud. Also my tachometer stops working. I normally turn the key off...I got a new water pump, and went back to fishing. Again, the buzzer or alarm stays on. Thinking it was a oil tank float switch or related, I had a new one put on about a year ago. However, if the temp is above 50 degrees or once the motor warms up to normal temp, the buzzer or alarm goes off. I know this, because the last time out, I got on the water without a problem, but when I stopped and started it up again, the alarm came on. Not wanting to blow the engine, I poured the right ratio of oil, into my gas tank. I fished all morning...till about noontime and the air temp warmed up...Once in warmer conditions, I do not have any problems.

WHAT DOES THIS SOUND LIKE???? Maybe the oil needs to be drained and new oil needs to be put in? Does the alarm sound...continuous buzzer, sound like a oil injection problem? Or overheat problem? I think it has to relate to the oil injector, but I am not a mechanic.

Sorry for the book, but this is starting to get to me....

It could be the temp sender ie shorted try diconnecting and see if it goers away, if not it just about would have to br the sender module

Four posibilities. Overheat sender, warning module, a short in the wiring somewhere, or the alarm itself. The wire you're looking for is tan with a blue stripe...

Disconnect the overheat sensor. If the alarm still sounds, it's probably okay.

Disconnect the warning module. If the alarm still sounds, it's probably okay.

That leaves a possible short. Look for anything obvious, like a screw through the main harness, or a pinched wire under the hood.

Last possibility is the alarm itself. The staticky sounds before the failure lead me to believe it's the module or the alarm. About 50/50 odds, but you can eliminate the module possibility by disconnecting it. If the alarm still sounds, replace the alarm.

Don't forget to reconnect the sender and module after you're done testing.

The one thing it's probably not is the oil tank sensor. That would be a beep beep beep...

Re: Constant BEEEEEEEEPPPPP on start-up. Help...

My engine has an alarm module that receives the signals from the oil float switch and the overtemp switch.

I'm going to throw my hat into the ring and say that your problem is electronically related and is caused by a thermally sensitive component in your (assuming you have one too) alarm module. I really doubt that the other parts of the circuit are that temperature sensitive; if so I think that cold temp would tend to make them loose contact, rather than make constant contact causing a constant alarm.

So if you exhaust Willie's suggestions, don't be surprised that you are changing out a warning module.
