Contaminated trim fluid

I'm helping my son-in-law get his Mercruiser 3.0/Alpha One stern drive up to snuff. Over the winter we were unaware that water had gotten into the power trim system and by spring both trim cylinders were cracked wide open. The remainder of the system looks intact. I've taken the trim pump and motor assembly off for a good cleaning, but I'm not sure just how far down I should strip it to ensure a good cleaning. Is it even necessary to strip it? The pump appears to be working, and I was wondering if running some clean trim fluid through it into a waste container would be all that's necessary.

I'd welcome any thoughts on the issue.

Thanks

I would suggest removing the pump, and dump and rinse with clean fluid. Then reinstall and flush more clean fluid thru the lines. Pump is pretty easy to remove

Ayuh,... I agree with AD,... Any water in the pump would be at the bottom of the tank, the pump is just above the oil,....

Oil floats, 'n water sinks,...

Does the pump consist of everything that's not the motor and plastic reservoir? The Seloc manual we have doesn't say much about it.

That is an excellent document! I've been looking for something like that and haven't found it. Thanks!

So I resolved to just separate the pump unit itself (thanks to that manual) from the rest of thing and rinse them both out as best I can with clean hydraulic fluid. We're going to have to flush that entire system anyway. I appreciate the input.
