hi folks

been reading a lot here and have learned a lot. can someone answer a question or give an opinion on the following problem.

i have a 1994 mercury 90 hp 3 cylinder motor and have changed the impeller about 2 months ago. the thing pees very well thereafter.

this morning, while operating the motor, a continuous warning beep came on and would not go away till i turned off the engine [ under 15 seconds] it was peeing fine and plenty of oil in the injector.

after about an hour, i started it up again and it ran fine.

should i be concern?

what other dangers could the warning be about?

previously, when it beep it only gave a short beep and it either low on oil or not peeing.

i dont have an owner's manual.

thanks in advance

jon

Thats a overheat sensor triggering the horn if it's not overheating the sensor is bad

Okie, who's 90 hp engine are you talking about Mercurys don't have a rotation sensor on the 1994 3 cyl. A steady horn is for heat, a pulsing horn is for oil. Go read your manual before giving wrong advice--Bob

Re: continuous warning beep...........

Nope, continuous beep is overheat alarm. Intermittant beep is oil alarm.

Are you saying that the alarm went off within 15 second of starting the motor? If so I would suspect either a faulty sensor or possible short somewhere in the sensor wire. To check the circuit, remove the wire from the sensor and touch it to ground with the key in RUN position. The alarm should sound.

You should be getting a short self-test beep each time you turn the key on. If not, the module itself may be bad.

hi folks,

hi folks, thanks for your recent reply.

here is a clearer narrative of the morning incident............we were cruising at about 4800RPM while looking for other fishing sites along the coast line when we heard the continuous beep. within 15 seconds or less after determining that the engine was peeing alright we shut the engine off. we then checked the oil and found that it was half full.

we then tried to start the engine again but the warning came back when the key is in the ON position.

we then used the kicker to get us back to the dock...hehehehe only two hours away....

anyway when we got close to the dock, we tried the big engine again and she fired up just fine with no warning at all!!! we even drove around the dock for about 5 minutes without a problem.

what do you folk suppose it the issues?

thank you okboatmech, laddies, and rodc for your recent reply.

jon

Re: continuous warning beep...........

With a good water pressure at the telltale, chances are it is a bad sensor or thermostat

I had the same happen on my 115 evinrude, i killed the motor and everytime i turned the keyswitch on the buzzer went off continuously. I felt the powerhead and noticed the starboard bank was too hot to touch whereas the port bank was cool to the touch, turns out the tstat in the starbd bank was stuck closed....could be your problem..

recently changed the t-stat, poppet, and related gaskets.
is there a way to test the sensor and where the heck is the sensor anyway?

regards

Re: continuous warning beep...........

if i remember correctly, u should have a wire exiting the cylinder heads. easiest way to check is to switch ignition on and probe the wires with a 12V automotive test lamp. one end earthed and the other to probe. The minute you probe the sensor wire the buzzer should sound. I use a test lamp because the globe provides enough resistance so that you do not place a dead short on a wire which may be carrying current and as such you stand little chance of blowing something.
