Ok, 1978 johnson 70 EL, with the Johnson Command center. First command center wouldn't go into reverse, so a used unit installed, worked fine a few days, then  "~~ SHABAM~~" the same problem.
Im tired of buying used junk, sick of single levers that are prone to fail, gears and cams that wear out, and days intended for fishing spent stranded at the dock.
Can anyone point me to a dual lever, NEW unit that has a key start and is compatible with my engine?
All im finding are these huge top or recessed mounts. I need a side mount, right side, for a 15 ft Glastron.

Single lever controls seldom fail, at least that's been my experience. My last one was over 20 years old, never any issues at all.

The cycle of the Command Center ended in 1978, so those are all getting old by any measure.

The next series are better and are plug compatible with your red plug engine harness. You can use any standard (not flush) J/E side mount up through 1995 with the red plug, so I would recommend that you find one of those, and as new as possible.
