control box on merc 500

I recently replaced what I can only describe as a kidney shaped plate (attached to the gear cable)in the control box as the groove had been worn away meaning I couldn't get full travel on the cable. The control lever moved free through a change in gears a couple of times and then suddenly locked out meaning I couldn't move into Fwd, Rev or Neut. Any advice please would be welcomed.

I would disconnect from motor and see if it frees<br />up. will tell you if problem is in gears or in the<br />control box.<br />good luck,<br />M.Y.

I'm assuming it has something to do with the dependancy on the throttle. If I were to pull back through the gears (full Throttle to Reverse) would that cause potential damage. If I strip the box down again and reset to Neutral, the cables run free. Is there a specific way that the cams need to be set?
