Well firstly let me say thank you again to all the help you guys gave me previously and I now have a running engine. I do however have a couple of other issues that I hope you can help me with. I have a 1977 Johnson 50 Model No. 50ESL71S S/N E3468275, which has electronic shift. The trottle movement did not seem to be correct so I took apart the control box and I discovered 2 things. 1. The trottle cable seem to slide through the plastic attacment that is joined to the trottle control lever. It would seem that this is not supposed to happend as the lever movement is not then translated to the engine via the cable. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this or where I can get a new calbe. 2. The Forward / Neutral / Reverse switch which is supposed to change as you go past center on the control lever does not. Is this switch supposed to be sprug loaded or something, because when the control lever is in the center position the switch which has a small round top on the arm sits in the grove at the bottom of the control lever. When you move the control lever forwards the switch is moved into the FWD position, however when the lever is brought back past center and into reverse the switch does not return to center or go into the reverse position.
I am sorry about the length of this post but if you have any information it would be greatly appreciated. I have the manual but it does not seem to cover my controller in any great detail.

Re: Control box problem!!

Your engine is a 1971 model, not 1977.

The cable shouldn't slide back and forth through the plastic thing. I don't know if you can fix it but new cables aren't all that expensive. You will need to know the length of the old one. Any Johnson dealer should have them. If not, try www.tenkillermarine.com.

From your post, I cannot tell if you are saying that the switch is bad or not. It should spring back to the center position on it's on. If it doesn't then it is no good. Unfortunately, those switches cost around $90.

Hey thanks carmangary, it's nice to know I have a 1971 engine and not a 1977, oh well. I'll check out the link you gave me to get a new cable. As for the switch...well it does not spring back into position at all, as I would have expected it to do also...so can I get those from the same place too?

I don't know if you can get the switch from them. I had to buy one a couple years ago and I had the local Johnson dealer order it for me.

Re: Control box problem!!

I found a complet control unit on e-bay for $36.50 with cables and wires included. It looks a bit beat up but the seller claims that it works just fine. So I guess if it has the parts I need I just got myself a deal. I'll let you know and thanks for all your help.
