Which is the throttle control on an Evinrude control box, older model, has red and black handles on it. I thought red was throttle but there is little "movement" of the control, it sits in the middle of the control and only goes forward and not any further back than middle, whether hooked up or not....the black one has complete travel. Problem is, when hooked up there is simply not enough control for the throttle on my 61 Fisherman....the best I can get is half throttle or no low speed, depending on how it is adjusted....

The bigger one is the throttle on the right side. I think it is red. It should have full travel back and forth. If not the box or cable has problems. The shifter is the smaller one (I think black) It should also have full travel.

Re: control box question

If it doesn't have full travel, consider the possibility that the casing guides are not installed flush with the end of the wire. --OR-- the wire has been broken and somebody has reinstalled the guide on the broken wire. Once the wire has broken, it has to be replaced.

The throttle also has a stop installed inside that adjusts how low you can go with it - to prevent stalling when docking, etc. It is a knob on the end of the box. Screwing it out will allow more travel.

Re: control box question

Thanks guys....the red handle won't budge anymore than from the top to the front...no way it will pull back any so i will disasemble it and see about that adjustment. It is a Simplex unit, the square one. If I can get this fixed I can use on my kicker rather than the tiller, which is a littel awkward on this old boat.
