Trying to replace a throttle cable for a Force 85 on a 17 footer I recently bought. No problem on the engine end, but very tight working room behind the mounting area for the control mechanism. The control mechanism is mounted through and behind fiberglas/plywood. The screwhead of the screw holding/stabilizing the throttle cable as it comes into the mechanism is totally stripped. So the whole control mechanism needs to come out for me to change out the cable. The space behind the mounting block is shallow and the throttle/shift drive shaft is too long to push back through the mounting hole far enough to orient the mechanism and drop it out for work.

Does this drive shaft pull off somehow? Any other trick (short of cutting through the fiberglas and plywood!)?

I Don't Know your boat, Or Control.....
But, Somebody Put that thing There, So it's Got to Come Out......
Is the Fiberglass/Plywood Panel Screwed in, Or Glassed in ????????
Most of the boats I've worked on, the Panels could be out of the boat in about 15 minutes, with a screwgun....

Re: Control box removal

Boat is a 17 foot Sunbird, 1987 according to the paperwork. I cannot see enough of the control mechanism to get a #/model. It may be a replacement as there are two other holes through the mounting panel that may have held an original control unit; this whole area is covered by a glued-on rubberized cover.
The mounting area for the controls is part of the molded shell that curves around to the right of the driver. It appears to be a molded extension of the gauges mounting panel. The plywood backing appears original, and is about 5/8" thick.

I am new to the forum; is it permissable to attach a picture? If so, what format ? -- I can save and post picture(s) is just about any common format.

Thanks for the reply. This should be simple --- as you note, somebody put that sucker in there.
