I have a 2004 Mercury 4 Stroke 60hp. I have 3 questions, I sure could use some help with.
I'm replacing the control box. A new one just arrived. Coming out of the bottom of the box there are some wires.
1) A large wrapped one with what looks to have a plug in for something. What is it for, what does it plug into?
2) 4 smaller wires. 2 have male ends, 2 have female ends. What are they for, what do they plug into?
3) On the 5 prong wire (its 5 or 6 can't remember) that connects to the engine there are also wires coming out. What are they for, where do they attach?

Thank you,
Keith

Asking a question about something that goes on a motor that we cannot see makes it hard to try and answer. Post a pic and also post your motor serial number?

8 prongs on the big wire. That goes to the engine. The wires coming out all have female ends.
The other wires from the control box have 3 Male ends and one Female end plug the plug.

Sorry got that mixed up.
The end that goes to the engine has 4 wires. One female, 3 males.
The box loose wires all female plus the plug

That's trim control
Blue/White = Trim UP
Green/White = Trim DOWN
Red = Battery power
Brown/White = Trim gauge and sender
Tan = Water temp gauge/sender

Do these have a Temp. sending unit? If so, where is it located? What wires connect to it? If it doesn't, where do you put one in at? I want to put in a Temp gage in....

OK, motor end of cable.... blue is trim up, green is trim down. They should plug into Y connectors on the motor trim switch. Brown is temp alarm and other brown is temp gauge. Most controls have a built in buzzer for over temp. Turn the key on (power connected), and ground each of the brown wires in turn. One should sound the buzzer. Connect that to the temp alarm sender. Not sure if your motor has both sensors.

On the control end. The mounded plug is usually for tach wiring and trim gauge wiring. Merc should sell the other half of the wiring harness, with ring terminals for the gauges. Wiring colors are a bit different than I expected though.

Hopefully your control also has trim up/down switches. If so, ignore the green and blue wiring, or connect them to the forward trim switch such as found on a bass boat. If your control doesn't have a trim switch, you could install one somewhere convenient.
