Control cable ends

I have just changed from the Old style control with 2 levers to a New style control with the single lever.
The cables were to short on the new style one and replaced them with the correct length cables. The old cables had the spring/pin on the shift and the throttle had the clip retainer. The new cables did not come with these attached.
I removed them from the old cables but they do not seem to fit very well. The small pin that holds the spring/pin in place is very loose and slides back and forth, while the clip on the throttle looks like it wants to pop off the posts.

The engine is a 1978 35hp Evinrude. What am I doing wrong or am I using the wrong retainers?

Re: Control cable ends

My understanding was that the ends were not removable on the New Style cable.

Re: Control cable ends

I believe 1978 was the last year with removeable ends. 1979 had non-removeable. Sounds like you have newer than 1978 cables.

Go to http://shop2.evinrude.com, select Electronic parts catalog, then OB Accessories and see what you can figure out.

Yes the cables are style # 479 which is the new style control.

Looks like a different part number for the throttle clip but I'm unsure what the difference is. Maybe time to contact dealer. I have one here that deals with a lot of old OMC stuff. The shift looks like the same parts.

BTW, 1st time I've looked around that part of shop2.evinrude. Need to spend more time looking there to see what I can find!

Re: Control cable ends

it is easier to convert old controls to new motor, than new controls to a old motor. i have converted many old 2 handles to new motors, to help keep the boat as vintage as possible.
