Control Cable Length

I am replacing the control cables on my 1998 70 VRO. The cables that are on the boat now were replaced with a salvaged set, and to be honest I never worried about the length though they seemed a bit long (they curl in front of the motor).

I'm ordering new control cables. Can anyone tell me how to properly determine the exact length I need?

Also, per a previous post I am doing this because I've had trouble with the cables freezing in cold weather. Is there any brand or type of cable that might perform better in sub-freezing conditions? I will probably just order the Teleflex cables from Cabela's (~$30 each) unless I hear otherwise.

Thank you!

Re: Control Cable Length

An older neighbor of mine saw me fiddling with trying to measure for control cables with a tape measure...followed his suggestion...take a garden hose and run it just like your cable(s), make sure to get a nice-sized loop, and then mark the spot where the hose meets the motor connection, measure the length and add in 6 inches.
