Control Cables?

happy holidays everyone<br /> I'm having a hard time w/ my control cables. I recently did a rebuild on my 1988 110hp rude and when i went to reattach the control cables the shift cable slips thru the rubber grommet. the lower unit shifts fine, the cables move fine. Have i forgot to do something? Is that rubber grommet what holds the cables tight? I also can't see how the adjustment wheels (on the cables) actually adjust the cables? I should of paid better attention to the cables when i removed them? Any suggestion? Thanks

Refreshing your memory..... That rubber grommet is simply a item that helps keep water from entering the engine at that area.<br /><br />The threaded trunion on the cables "clamp" into the retaining barrels located to the lower starboard side (right) of the carburetor face plate assy.<br /><br />When all is as it should be, the proper method to adjust the shift cable is to disconnect the cable from the engine. Move the shift linkage on the engine to find the center of the play in neutral, and when found, leave it centered.<br /><br />Now, grab the end of the shift cable sleeve, push and pull it to find the center of the play there, and center that play.<br /><br />Adjust the trunion on the threaded portion of the shift cable so that the centered play of the cable lines up with the centered play of the engine's shift linkage. Install and lock the shift cable with the retaining clamp in that position. That's it.<br /><br />Now, doesn't that make you wonder what else you might have forgotten? (grin)

Joe, thank you so much, i feel like a dummy, i had yet to mount the carburater faceplate. LOL Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't. (laugh) happy holidays
