Control hook ups

So I just switched out a 1975 25hp merc for a 1989 50hp merc. Everything has went smooth until I hooked up the controls. Everything is backwords. When I shift it into frwd with the controls it shifts into reverse on the motor. And the throttle cable does the opposite also. Could I have really hooked it up wrong or can the controls from the old motor really be opposite? Thanks.

The controls are likely correct. Make sure the cables have not been switched. When you move the throttle handle from Neutral to fwd, the shift cable moves first. Throttle cable should push carbs closed in neutral.

if the gearcase on the motor was installed incorrectly, the gears can be switched.
