controls won't go into reverse!

HI guys, my controls wont go into reverse even when i disconnected the linkage, its like the trigger under the throttle is not engaging what its meant to and another puzzle is it will not start in neutral now but will when in forward gear, could this have been caused by someone messing with it as its moored along a quay where boats have been vandalized in the past, any help would be great thanks.

Gee, how about a HP and year for that motor. Is it remote control? What kind of control? MerControl?

Hi its a brownband 50 hp 2 stroke, dont know the make of the controls looks like standard controls for an outboard pretty sure there is no make on it.

I guess the shift cable could be out of adjustment, but why would anyone vandalize that? Have you had the gearcase off recently?

HI, yea i had a new impeller fitted could that be the cause?

Yes, often the upper shift lever and the lower shift lever are not aligned correctly, when the gearcase is installed. The only way to fix it is to remove the gearcase, set it and the control to neutral and reinstall the gearcase. I do not know if that is your issue, but it might be.
